Our History
Legend has it that in the midst of a rough sea and a merciless storm, a
small island in the Atlantic served as a refuge for João Gonçalves Zarco, Tristão Vaz Teixeira and his sailing companions.
The year dates back to 1418 and the name given to the island was Porto Santo. The overseas discoveries had their influence and the History of Portugal changed.
The island of Porto Santo has evolved gradually, resisting various adversities weather conditions and invasions by looters.
In the 20th century , in 1960 , Porto Santo Airport was opened, the first in the Madeira archipelago. In the same year, construction began on the Porto Santo Hotel, the first hotel on the island, having opened in 1962 , with around 40 rooms.
Since then, over the decades and with the evolution of the importance of the sector, Tourism in Portugal, the Hotel Porto Santo has undergone several changes , following the time and its contemporaneity, but maintaining the traits of its style and beauty originals.
In 2006, new complexes appeared, namely the Villas and the Spa, which
brought modernity and the concept of wellness, in order to provide a service different and more complete to its customers.
Nowadays, Hotel Porto Santo & Spa welcomes tourists from all over the world, maintaining the spirit of discovery adjacent to the beginning of the Golden Isle. The purpose continues to make Porto Santo known with the welcoming nature that characterizes the local inhabitants, maintaining the Portuguese essence in the art of hospitality.
